Ronald McDonald House Charities fund Ronald McDonald Houses all over the world. The purpose of the Ronald McDonald Houses is to provide a place for parents of sick children in nearby hospitals to stay at night for little or no cost. The first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1974. Former Philadelphia Eagles player, Fred Hill, and his wife opened the house after staying in hospital rooms while their daughter received treatment for leukemia. They wanted to create a home away from home for families whose children were receiving long-term treatment far from home. Currently there are more than 250 houses in 30 countries.
